MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Deri urged for an emergency UN session that would address the worsening humanitarian situation in Syria, according to the Times of Israel newspaper.

Deri reportedly alluded to his nation's tragic past as the reason Israel could not ignore the deaths of civilians in Aleppo.

According to the newspaper, the interior minister's office has not responded to the journalists' question on the possibility of Israel taking in Syrian refugees.

Over the recent months, Aleppo became a major battleground in Syria, which has been in the state of civil war since 2011. The battles around Aleppo involve government forces, jihadists, and numerous opposition groups. Eastern Aleppo is currently encircled by government troops, and the fighting against rebels and terrorists has affected thousands of civilians still trapped in the city. The recent Damascus' offensive has resulted in liberation of large territories in the eastern part of Aleppo.
