On Monday, media reported that Saudi Arabia had called for an emergency UN General Assembly meeting to deal with the situation in Syria.

In December, UN representatives from Saudi Arabia, along with those from Turkey, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, made a similar call. In a joint statement they said the humanitarian crisis in Aleppo required the General Assembly's urgent actions as the UN Security Council was divided and did not act on the matter.

Over the recent months, Aleppo became a major battleground in Syria between government forces and militants. Earlier on Tuesday, the Russian reconciliation center said that the Syrian authorities are controlling over 98 percent of the territory of Aleppo, with militants present in less than 3 square kilometers (1.1 square mile).

The Arab League, established back in 1945, comprises 22 regional states, which are striving to cooperate on political, economic, cultural, scientific, and social issues in order to promote the interests of the Arab world.
