BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – President of the European Council Donald Tusk congratulated on Tuesday Paolo Gentiloni on being appointed Italian prime minister and expressed his confidence that Italy will continue to play a constructive role in dealing with EU common challenges.
"Your appointment comes at a crucial time for Italy and the European Union. Today, more than ever, we need unity and solidarity. I am confident that through your leadership and commitment, Italy will maintain its constructive role in dealing with the many challenges we face," Tusk said in a letter of congratulations.
"I look forward to working with you and to welcoming you at the European Council on 15 December," Tusk added.
Earlier on Tuesday, Gentiloni submitted to President Sergio Mattarella a list of ministers to form the new cabinet. The swearing-in ceremony is set to be held at 19:00 GMT at the Quirinal Palace.
On December 7, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi stepped down after his constitutional reform proposals were rejected by Italians in a referendum, which was largely seen as an opportunity for the nation to express its dissatisfaction with the government.
