The situation in the Syrian city of Aleppo, the center of a major military confrontation, is not only a failure of the international diplomacy, but also a tragedy for the civilization, recently appointed Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said Wednesday.

ROME (Sputnik) — Over the recent months, Aleppo became a major battleground in Syria in a continuing conflict between government forces and militants, leading to many civilians trapped in the areas of the city held by the militants.

"What is happening now in Aleppo is a tragedy unacceptable for our civilization," Gentiloni said, addressing the Italian Senate.

The prime minister added that the situation in Aleppo signified a failure for the diplomatic negotiations led in the last few months.

Gentiloni expressed regret over the unsuccessful attempt of the United States and Russia to broker a ceasefire.

On Tuesday, the Russian reconciliation center said that the Syrian government army was controlling over 98 percent of the territory of Aleppo, with militants present in less than 3 square kilometers (1.1 square mile).
