Turkish law enforcers have detained more than 40,000 people and arrested over 10,500 during security operations over their ties to terrorist organizations, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday.

ANKARA (Sputnik) — He added that counterterror raids had also resulted in death of more than 9,500 militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) group.

"During [anti-terror] operations, more than 40,000 have been detained and more than 10,500 have been arrested," Erdogan said.

The PKK is outlawed in Turkey as a terrorist organization. A ceasefire between the Turkish government and Kurdish rebels collapsed in July 2015, prompting authorities to launch a military operation in the Kurdish-dominated southeast.
