MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Amendments proposed by Richard Corbett included an omission of a clause on the European Parliament insisting that the Brexit referendum outcome must be respected, as well as inserting a sentence which would allow the United Kingdom to "reconsider" its decision to leave, The Telegraph newspaper reported after seeing the documents.
Other changes were largely related to phrasing, with a sentence describing the referendum outcome as a "decision to leave the EU” replaced with the word "result."
On Saturday, Corbett defended the amendments, claiming these were designed to be in line with UK laws and stressing that the referendum was not legally binding, the newspaper said.
The proposed changes were rejected after a vote in the European Parliament's Committee on Constitutional Affairs in October. The final version of the report is expected to be put to the vote by EU lawmakers in February, just a month before the deadline set by UK Prime Minister Theresa May on triggering Brexit negotiations.
In June, the United Kingdom voted in a referendum to leave the European Union.
