Russian Investigative Committee Opens Criminal Case Over Ambassador Killing

The Russian Investigative Committee said it opened a criminal investigation into the assassination of Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Karlov was killed by a gunman at an art gallery exhibition opening in Ankara. Three other people were also injured in the attack.

"Russian Investigative Committee's main department for the most serious cases has opened a criminal case over the murder of Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov," the committee said in a statement.

State Department Has Not Communicated With Turkey, Russia on Killing of Karlov
The crime involved article 361 of the criminal code, the statement said.

The article deals with punishment for acts of international terrorism which have caused a person's death.

Video footage of the events indicates that the attack may be linked to Russia's stance on fighting international terrorism, the statement added.
