MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The suspect was detained last July in connection with an investigation into a sexual attack, German security sources told the local news agency DPA. It did not specify whether the attack took place in Berlin or possibly in Cologne.
There is reportedly an entry on the man, suspected to be a Pakistani immigrant who filed for asylum in Germany last February, in Germany’s nationwide police database Inpol.
Last night’s truck attack on a market near Berlin’s busy shopping street Kurfuerstendamm killed 12 people and left others fighting for their lives. Almost 50 were injured.
German authorities said it was presumed to be an act of terrorism. Berlin police said the suspect, who was caught during an attempt to flee the site of the deadly crash, denied his involvement.
