China Condemns Russian Ambassador's Murder in Turkey

China condemns Monday's killing of Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov and supports Russia's fight against terrorism, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Tuesday.

BEIJING (Sputnik) — On Monday, Karlov was killed by a gunman at an art gallery exhibition opening in Ankara. Three other people were also injured in the attack. The Russian Foreign Ministry said it considers the attack a terrorist act.

"The Chinese side strongly condemns this savage act committed against a diplomat and opposes any form of terrorism… The Chinese side is ready to firmly support Russian efforts and actions in fighting terrorism alongside the international community, as well as improving cooperation in the fight against terror," the minister said in a letter to his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, as quoted in a Foreign Ministry statement.

Karlov's murder has been widely condemned by foreign ministries and diplomats from around the world.

The attack came just a day before Turkish, Russian and Iranian foreign ministers were due to meet in Moscow to discuss settling the Syrian conflict. The Turkish minister arrived in Moscow and decided to press on with the meeting despite the attack, stressing that the incident will not impact relations between Turkey and Russia.
