"Labour will scrutinise the SNP’s proposals and hold nationalist ministers to account on whether or not they can actually be delivered. But we are very clear that Labour will not support anything that puts Scotland’s place in the United Kingdom at risk. The SNP’s Brexit paper should accept that remaining in the UK is even more important to Scotland than being part of the European Union," Macdonald said prior to the unveiling of the SNP's proposals, as cited by the Guardian.
He added that the party would also oppose the SNP using "Brexit as an excuse to force another independence referendum."
Scottish Conservatives’ constitution spokesman Adam Tomkins stated that the Scottish Conservatives are also seeking "a deal for the whole UK which gives us the maximum access to trade freely in the EU single market."
On June 23, the United Kingdom voted in a referendum to leave the European Union. While English and Welsh voters backed leaving the bloc, voters in Scotland and Northern Ireland mostly voted to remain.
