PORTLAND (Sputnik) — On Monday, four Democratic electors from Washington rejected their party's 2016 presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton. Three of the state's electors cast their votes for Republican former secretary of state Colin Powell. One elector, Robert Satiacum, cast his vote for Spotted Eagle from the Yankton Sioux Tribe in South Dakota.
"I think I'm totally shocked," Spotted Eagle told South Dakota's The Daily Republic on Tuesday.
Spotted Eagle, 68, is a known activist protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline project that would deliver fuel under Lake Oahe in North Dakota.
On Monday, all 538 Electoral College members met in their respective capitals to cast ballots for the next president. Republican Donald Trump received 304 votes well over the 270 threshold needed to secure his victory as the 45th US president.
