Majority of Britons Predict Good Year for UK, Bad for EU

45 percent of Britons think the United Kingdom will prosper in the coming year, while 69 percent expect the European Union to have bad time in 2017, according to the poll.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A slim majority of Britons thinks the year 2017 will bring fortune to the United Kingdom, while a sizably bigger percentage expects it to be bad for the European Union, a poll released Wednesday found.

The Ipsos MORI’s latest Political Monitor survey found 45 percent of those polled think the United Kingdom will prosper in the coming year, while 43 percent are less optimistic.

Sixty-nine percent expect the European Union to have bad time in 2017. Fifty-nine percent said the future does not look promising for the United States.

In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to outperform her party by 51 percent of respondents, with 43 percent saying next year looks promising for Conservatives.

In the opposition camp, only 23 percent think 2017 will be a good year for the Labour Party and 21 percent expect it to bring luck to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The outlook for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) is more positive, with 41 percent saying it will be a good year for the far-right. The public was split on the future of Liberal Democrats, with 39 percent expecting them to have a good year versus 41 percent thinking it will be a bad one.
