San Francisco Mulls Lawsuit to Halt Uber Deployment of 'Self-Driving' Cars
01:11 GMT 21.12.2016 (Updated: 11:26 GMT 06.08.2022) The city of San Francisco is considering a lawsuit against the ride-sharing service Uber to halt the introduction of self-driving cars, published reports quoted Mayor Ed Lee as saying on Tuesday.
PORTLAND (Sputnik) – Self-driving cars pose threat to security, Lee claimed.
"I can't have people experimenting and have the risk to safety at the front line," Lee told the San Francisco Examiner newspaper.
15 December 2016, 20:13 GMT
Lee said the cars should not use city streets because special licenses or permits for self-driving cars would be needed.
Uber responded that licenses are not necessary because a licensed human driver will be in cars and able to take control if glitches develop in the experimental vehicles.
The San Francisco Department of Motor Vehicles (DMB) considers the vehicles "fully autonomous" even if a human is behind the wheel, DMV spokesman Armando Botello said in the reports.
