WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The sale to Norway of up to five P-8A surveillance aircraft has been approved by the US Department of State and the US Congress has been notified, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced in a press release on Wednesday.

"This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a NATO ally which has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability throughout the world," the release stated.

The sale is valued at up to $1.75 billion, the release noted.

The P-8A, also known as the Poseidon, is designed for long-range anti-submarine warfare; anti-surface warfare; and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

Norwegian Defense Minister Ine Eriksen Soreide said in a statement quoted by the US Naval Institute that the P-8As will replace the nation’s current six P-3 Orion and three DA-20 Jet Falcon surveillance planes.
