"In future, no car or vehicle will be registered without an adequate parking space available certificate. I am very keen on this. I am holding discussion with the Surface Transport Minister and also sensitizing the states. We would be moving in that direction," India's Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu told the media.
The new rule may be incorporated into the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2016 to ensure this law is applicable all over the country. Lack of parking space is a cause of concern and often leads to altercations. The situation is more complex in metro cities as the number of vehicles is increasing exponentially without any cumulative increase in the parking areas. India's capital city Delhi has around eight million cars and around 1,200 more are added to the fleet every day.
Although this is a welcome move to decongest the traffic, its implementation is not easy as the registration of vehicles and parking issues are dealt by different bodies and more importantly without having an efficient public transport system it is not justifiable to bar people from buying new vehicles.
