Hexastix: Crazy Math Puzzle Invites Users to Sculpture 72 Pencils
06:55 GMT 28.12.2016 (Updated: 19:28 GMT 19.10.2022) The word Hexastix refers to infinitely regular hexagonal prisms – hexagonal sticks. The idea is that if you filled every hole in this configuration, and expanded your Hexastix forever, the result fills 75% of space, and has some crazy symmetry group described in “The Symmetry of Things”, by Conway, Burgiel, and Goodman-Strauss.
Recently, another enthusiast has made his own Hexastix. In the process of his work, Colby Jurgensen came to the conclusion that it is easier if you have at least 80 pencils to make spacers while inserting it. Any kind of sticks can be used.
