Only 'Fools Would Think' Having Good Ties With Russia Bad Thing for US – Trump
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Lavrov told Russian lower house lawmakers that "time and serious work" is needed to "overcome the severe damage caused to Russian-US interaction" under former President Barack Obama.

"We share President Trump's position in favor of establishing normal interaction. At the same time, of course, we will judge based on actions," Lavrov said.

Moscow hopes that the new US president, Donald Trump, will stick to the policy of US non-interference in the affairs of other states, Lavrov said.

"We hope that Donald Trump, who postulated his determination to solve America's problems first and to reject interference in the internal affairs of other states, will follow the same line."

According to Lavrov, the Russian side is ready to make its own contribution to the normalization of relations between Moscow and Washington on behalf of global security and stability.

Moscow is not under the illusion that a new "reset" is ahead in its relations will Washington, the minister said.

"We have no illusions that there will be a new reset with the US, no naive expectations."

"We know that [US President Donald] Trump is considered a master dealmaker, but [Russian President] Vladimir Putin can also negotiate and always in the interests of Russia," he reaffirmed.

The minister stressed that the dialogue with the United States, as well as with the European Union "cannot be based on anything, but the principles of equality, mutual respect and taking the mutual interests into consideration."

Donald Trump has repeatedly called for normalizing ties with Russia, saying that "only 'stupid' people or fools would think" that having good ties with Moscow is a bad thing for Washington.

During his inauguration, Trump reiterated his previous statements, saying that he will adhere to the "America First" policy and minimize US' inteference in the affairs of other countries.
