In particular, the politician shared his thoughts about the recent meeting between Poroshenko and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
"At first I wondered what issues could have been discussed at the meeting between Poroshenko and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. But then, reading reports about the aggravation of the situation in the east of Ukraine, I took notice of the proximity of the two events in time," Hunko said in an interview with Sputnik Germany.
Hunko believes that the main issue discussed during the meeting was sanctions against Russia and Germany's support for the Kiev government.
"This makes us suspect that there might have been a certain interest in the escalation," the politician stressed.
According to Hunko, there is a possibility that the new US leadership might lift sanctions against Moscow regardless of how the situation in Ukraine will develop.
The situation near the industrial town of Avdiivka and neighboring Yasynuvata has been tense for several days, with civilians being deprived of running water, central heating and electricity. The Ukrainian forces and Donbass militia accused each other of being responsible for the escalation of the fighting.
On Monday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had to interrupt his visit to Germany due to the escalation of the security situation on the line of contact in eastern Ukraine. He also charged his aides with calling for an extraordinary session of the Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine to discuss the situation.
