Today Russians and Eastern Slavs celebrate the Sunday of Forgiveness, the last day of Maslenitsa week.

This is one of the oldest surviving Slavic holidays, which corresponds to the Western Christian Carnival.

During  Maslenitsa week people make pancakes and pay visits to friends and relatives. On the very last day of the festivities they set Lady Maslenitsa, a winter's effigy, on fire. In ancient times this ritual was aimed at improving soil fertility.
