"The idea that I was part of a 'continuous exchange of information during the campaign between Trump surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government' is totally false," the attorney general said to reporters.
Despite that, a number of lawmakers has called on Sessions to resign.
"The Democrats are overplaying their hand," Trump said in the statement following the conference. "Jeff Sessions is an honest man. He did not say anything wrong. He could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not intentional<…>It is a total witch hunt!"
Earlier in the day, Trump said he was completely confident in Sessions amid allegations that the attorney general misled the Senate about his discussions with Kislyak, according to ABC News. The president has also noted that he does not think Sessions should recuse himself.
On March 1, the Washington Post reported that Jeff Sessions had two conversations with Sergei Kislyak last year while he was a US senator. The media outlet drew attention to the fact that Sessions didn't disclose this fact during his confirmation hearings.
