A total of 605 delegates out of 608 at a special conference of Germany's Social Democratic Party voted in favor of former European Parliament President Martin Schulz as party chief and chancellor nominee.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — Former European Parliament President Martin Schulz was approved at a special conference of Germany's Social Democratic Party on Sunday as party chief and chancellor nominee.

A total of 605 delegates out of 608 voted in favor of Schulz, with three ballots recognized as not valid.

The snap party conference is taking place in Berlin and has gathered about 3,000 guests and 500 journalists.
