NATO Chief Confirms Liaison Office in Moldova to Open 'Soon'
07:48 GMT 30.03.2017 (Updated: 09:03 GMT 30.03.2017) The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will soon open its liaison office in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday.
BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller said last month that the office would open in Chisinau "this year."
"We will soon open a NATO Liaison Office in Chisinau. It will be a small diplomatic mission with only civilian staff," Stoltenberg said at a briefing with Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip.
The Western military alliance maintains liaison offices in Ukraine and Georgia.
The NATO secretary general also thanked Filip for Moldova’s contribution to the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.
NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller said in February that the office would open in Chisinau "this year."
Moldova is constitutionally neutral, which means it does not participate or support any belligerents in wars. Moldova cooperates with NATO after joining the Partnership for Peace in 1994 and under the Individual Partnership Action Plan.
