Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday ordered to assess the metro's vulnerability within three months, according to a document posted on the government website.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Monday, an explosion hit an underground carriage on the stretch between two metro stations in the central part of St. Petersburg, killing at least 14 and injuring dozens.

One more explosive device was found at another metro station and defused by specialists.

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation into the suspected terrorist attack.

Earlier Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich stated that Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev would sign a new metro transportation safety act.

Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich told reporters, also on Wednesday, that the document had taken months to elaborate and, following the events in St. Petersburg, was checked again to ensure that it took the relevant circumstances into consideration.

"And [we] saw once again that all the regulations outlined in the document correspond to these circumstances," Dvorkovich said.

The deputy prime minister said that special services and subway agents are already complying with most regulations in the document.

Dvorkovich added that all subway operators in Russian cities had to appoint people responsible for transport security, establish transport security units and the proper procedure for their interaction with special services, law enforcement and other relevant organizations. The deputy prime minister said that the subway operators would also have to ensure that all stations and rail stretches are fitted with necessary safety features.
