Located outside of Manhattan, New York, Teterboro is often used by business people and as such sees quite a few private planes.
According to the the New York/New New Jersey Port Authority, the plane departed from Philadelphia International Airport and went down around 3:30 pm local time, about half a mile from the airport.
Originally the site of a manufacturing plant during World War I, what is today the Teterboro Airport saw its first flight in 1919. Today, Teterboro serves as a general aviation relief airport owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
According to the Port Authority website, Teterboro covers 827 acres and is the oldest airport operating in the New York and New Jersey Metropolitan area that focuses on "removing the smaller and slower aircraft from the regional air traffic that would cause major congestion at the Port Authority's commercial airports."
The airport has been closed and flight operations have come to a halt as a result of the crash.
