MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Verkhovna Rada passed earlier on Tuesday a bill that introduces administrative punishment, including fines or arrests, for manufacturing and wearing of St. George's ribbons in Ukraine. The explanatory note to the law states that since 2014 the St. George's ribbon has been used by "pro-Russian separatists on the territory of Ukraine and became a symbol of separatism in Ukraine."
"Seriously, the decision is antidemocratic and anti-historical, which casts doubt on the fundamental possibility of any unification of the country. And how, I wonder, Ukraine will celebrate the Victory Day and conduct the Immortal Regiment marches next year?"- Zakharova wrote in her Facebook blog.
She pointed out that that the Ukrainian government had neither money nor will to solve real problems.
It has become a tradition to wear the ribbon ahead of May 9 celebrations in Russia and former Soviet countries. For millions of people in Russia and former Soviet countries, this Ribbon is a manifestation of national memory, a bond between generations and a link to former military glory.
