Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Thursday described the appointment of ex-FBI chief Robert Mueller as a special counsel in the case of alleged Russian interference in the US election as US internal processes.

SOCHI (Sputnik) — The US Department of Justice has appointed former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Mueller a special counsel to investigate Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election in the United State.

"We cannot speak for our US colleagues, we have nothing to comment on here. These are some sort of internal US processes. You know how President [Vladimir] Putin described them," Peskov told journalists, commenting on Mueller's appointment as a special counsel.

Mueller's appointment came after Trump fired Comey from the position of FBI director based on recommendations from Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Rosenstein. The firing took place amid the ongoing investigations into the Trump team's alleged ties with Russia and the Kremlin’s alleged interference in the US election.

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave exhaustive comments on the alleged contacts between Russian officials and US President Donald Trump, there is nothing to add, Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

Earlier Thursday, the Reuters news agency cited unnamed current and former US officials as saying that Trump election campaign advisers allegedly "were in contact with Russian officials" during "the last seven months of the 2016 presidential race."

"I want to remind you of the assessment that the [Russian] president gave to what is happening now in the United States in the context of this plot, I can even recall it specifically, this is 'political schizophrenia'. We have nothing to add to what the president said as it was an exhaustive definition," Peskov said when asked to comment on alleged contacts between Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and the Trump campaign headquarters.

Russian officials have repeatedly denied charges of interfering in the US election, characterizing the allegations as an absurd attempt to divert public attention from domestic issues. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow did not have official contacts with Trump's team during the presidential campaign.
