According to a statement on his website, Allman had "struggled with many health issues over the past several years."
Formed in 1969, the influential Allman Brothers Band had Allman as its organ player and singer, although his older brother Duane Allman was the de facto leader.
Allman "passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia," according to a Saturday statement on the singer's website.
"Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years," the statement continued. "During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times."
What is referred to by many as the first authentic "Southern-rock" group, the legendary Allman Brothers Band, created with his older brother guitarist Duane Allman, became the standard for incendiary improvised rock improvisation along the blues style, effectively writing the book for several generations of rock musicians.
Their records sold in the millions, receiving multiple platinum status notations, as well as many Grammy awards, notably for what many consider to be one of the greatest live rock albums ever made: The Allman Brothers Band at the Fillmore East, released 1971.
