Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he has disagreements with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, but there is also common ground on economics and some aspects of international relations.

STRELNA (Sputnik) — The Russian president was asked about Russia-Germany ties under Merkel's chancellorship and how the relations may develop under her political rival Martin Schulz.

"We have differences, but there are many points of contact, especially concerning the issue of economic cooperation. There are also incidentally similar opinions in many respects in some aspects of international politics," Putin said.

Speaking at a summit of heads of international news agencies as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), he noted that "there are also issues where our approaches to a possible solution differ."

Putin added that he has no doubts Moscow and Berlin will continue cooperation after the elections in Germany, emphasizing that Russia will work with any candidate the Germans chose.

"In my opinion, if both our parterns and we will be guided by not a momentary political conjuncture, but the fundamental interests of our countries, our peoples, then we will definitely find not only points of contact, but the right way of interaction, and an effective way of cooperation. I have no big doubts — there are no doubts about this at all, because we have a lot of mutual interests," Putin said.

Moscow is ready to work with any chancellor ready for a constuctive dialogue, Putin said.

"It does not really matter for us, I mean the whole Russian team, whom to work with, the most important thing is that these people had a constructive attitude like us. We have no preferences," Putin said, speaking of the elections in Germany.
