WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States added Fared Saal, a German member of the Islamic State terror group (Daesh), to its counter-terror sanctions list, the Treasury Department Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said in a press release on Friday.

"OFAC took action today against Fared Saal (Saal), an Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) facilitator, recruiter, and fighter. Saal is being designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist," the release stated.

Saal, also known as Abu Luqmaan Al-Almani, has has recruited and facilitated the travel of potential foreign fighters to Syria through Turkey, according to OFAC.

As of March 2015, Saal was also a "point of contact" for Islamic State members seeking specialized training.

Additionally, OFAC said Saal has fought for the group, held a leadership position in an Islamic State battalion and appeared in propaganda videos with other foreign fighters.

Coordinating with the United States, the United Nations also sanctioned Saal, obligating all member states to freeze his assets and prohibit him from traveling.

The US sanctions block any of Saal’s assets subject to US jurisdiction and prohibit US persons from doing business with him.
