WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Maryland had hoped to secure the new FBI headquarters in a competition with the neighboring state of Virginia, with the prospect of tens of thousands of jobs moving to their respective jurisdictions.
"Our national security mandates that we move forward with building a secure, fully consolidated FBI headquarters," a joint release from US Senators Ben Cardin, Chris Ban Hollen and Congressmen Steny Hoyer and Anthony Brown stated.
Cancellation of the project leaves FBI headquarters in an aging downtown Washington landmark building that is in need of a top-to-bottom remake.
"The Hoover Building is crumbling around the FBI," the lawmakers said. "It is unfathomable that the Trump Administration would fail to move forward on a secure headquarters for the FBI workforce that serves on the front lines of our nation’s law enforcement and counter terrorism efforts."
