WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system has successfully intercepted a target during a missile test conducted by the US Missile Defense Agency, Lockheed Martin said in a press release on Tuesday.
"The Lockheed Martin built Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system successfully intercepted a target today in a missile defense test led by the US Missile Defense Agency with critical support provided by the US Army," the release stated.
The company noted that the THAAD system located at the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Alaska detected, tracked and intercepted an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) target.
THAAD has successfully completed 14 interception attempts since 2005, and the latest test was its first interception of an IRBM, the release added.
