German FM Says Merkel Responsible for Violence During Hamburg G20 Summit
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Die Zeit newspaper, Scholz admitted that Hamburg residents had to undergo much inconvenience due to considerable traffic restrictions, violence and chaos that protesters brought to the city.

The mayor also said that he would not resign due to the unrest during the G20 summit. Calls for Scholz's resignation appeared on the first day of the demonstrations. The mayor was accused of failing to handle the protests and organize the work of police services properly.

"The police did everything that could have been done to ensure a secure run of the summit in the city," Scholz was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

The mayor said that the perpetrators should be brought to justice and thanked medics, firefighters and police officers for their assistance during the unrest.

During the G20 summit in Hamburg on July 7-8, protesters set fire to cars, threw bottles and stones at police, looted shops and barricaded streets for three days. A total of 20,000 officers were stationed locally in order to ensure peaceful protests, with nearly 500 of them injured in clashes with demonstrators. Hamburg law enforcement agencies have already established a special committee responsible for the investigation into protests during the G20 summit.
