"Two congressmen introducing the US president impeachment act for consideration of the House of Representatives is a logical extension of the manhunt that the election-losing Democrats organized for Trump. By this, they confirm once again that the Russian issue is a pretext, not the cause. And that the US politicians simply do not know how to lose, as it turns out," Kosachev said commenting the impeachment efforts made by Democrats Al Green and Brad Sherman.
The Russian lawmaker pointed out that so far, the leading Democrats had distanced themselves from the initiative, probably because the move would only rally the Republicans around Trump.
"But there is no doubt that this trump card will be used sooner or later on a more systematic level, as soon a critical mass of arguments pile up – if they pile up – that would also influence the Republicans’ positions," Kosachev argued.
The scandal around the Trump team's ties with Russian-connected individuals will probably continue to grow, and will likely become more bizarre, the Russian parliamentarian predicts.
"Russia keeps learning with a sense of astonishment about some unknown persons investigated by the US that allegedly acted on Kremlin’s behalf … And also about new sensational ‘facts’ on secret ties of yet other people from the US president’s inner circle, usually on a ‘they once said’ level," he said.
During the weekend, the US president's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., was accused by US media of holding an unreported meeting with a Russian lawyer allegedly connected to the Russian government in 2016, who is said to have promised to share damaging information about Trump's rival in the presidential race Hilary Clinton.
After Trump fired then FBI Director James Comey who had conducted an investigation into his campaign's alleged ties to Russia, US lawmakers started voicing calls for the US president's impeachment. Both the White House and multiple Russian officials have denied allegations of collusion, and Moscow has repeatedly denied it interfered in the 2016 US presidential election.
In late May, a poll showed that the percentage of US voters that would like to see Trump impeached had increased.
