Metropolitan Police Say Detained Terror Suspect at London City Airport

The Counter Terrorism Command of London’s Metropolitan Police (Met) arrested a man on suspicion of preparation of acts to commit terrorism at the London City Airport.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Counter Terrorism Command of London’s Metropolitan Police (Met) said Friday it had apprehended a terror suspect at the London City Airport and subsequently released him on bail.

"Officers from the Met's Counter Terrorism Command have arrested a man on suspicion of preparation of acts to commit terrorism. The 49-year-old man was stopped by officers at London City Airport under schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000 on Thursday, 13 July. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of preparation of acts to commit terrorism," the police said in a statement.

After the detention, the suspect was taken to a police station and subsequently released on bail to return to a date in late July, the statement added.

"Officers also carried out a search at an address in Essex, which is now complete," the statement said.

The United Kingdom has suffered a number of terror attacks over the recent months including the last one on June 1 in London leaving seven people killed and 48 injured.

The country is currently on a "severe" threat level for international terrorism, meaning that an attack is highly likely. The UK media reported in late May that the UK intelligence services had spotted some 23,000 individuals with extremist views considered to pose a potential terrorist threat.
