The US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) seized $1 million worth of marijuana that was smuggled in from Mexico in hot-off-the-line Ford Fusion cars.

Officials are investigating after car dealership workers found some of the weed in the trunk of one of the Fusions. DEA agents later found most of it in the vehicles’ spare tire wells. The Fusions were being shipped by rail to Lordstown, Ohio, after being built in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, RT reported.

In total more than 400 pounds of marijuana were found in four counties. Although smuggling marijuana in cars originating in Mexico isn’t a new tactic, officials believe smugglers may have made some mistake that caused the half moon-shaped drug packages to be misplaced.

Each of the impounded cars carried about 32 pounds of marijuana, according to officials.

Similar incidents earlier this year saw roughly 1,100 pounds of marijuana smuggled into the US in the wheel wells of Ford Fusions that were making their way to St. Paul, Minnesota. These drugs had a street value of $1.4 million.

"We're aware of the situation and are taking it very seriously," a Ford spokesman said Saturday, according to CNN. "We are working with the FBI and customs on an extensive investigation. We have confirmed that this is not happening at our plant or at our internal shipping yards."

No arrests have been made in the most recent bust.
