Iraqi Kurdistan’s President Masoud Barzani has signed a decree setting parliamentary and presidential elections in the region for November 1, local media reported on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The decree, as signed on July 12, said that the date was set in accordance with the law passed by the region’s legislature in 2005, the Rudaw news agency reported.

“All concerned parties are committed to do the necessary work and will support and coordinate with the Kurdistan Higher Independent Election Commission and Referendum to implement this decree,” the decree said.

Kurdistan became an autonomous region in Iraq after former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was overthrown and a new constitution was adopted in 2005.

Since then, Kurdistan’s authorities have repeatedly raised the issue of the region’s independence and announced on June 7 that the referendum on the issue would be held in September.
