The poll also demonstrated that 9 percent of the respondents would vote for The Left party, while The Greens and the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) can count on 8 percent of votes each.
One more party that is likely to gain seats in the German parliament is the liberal Free Democratic Party supported by 7 percent of respondents.
The poll also showed that if the chancellor was elected directly, Merkel would win with a 52 percent backing. Under the same circumstances, former President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz, who is the incumbent chairman of the SPD, would only be supported by 22 percent of the voters.
The poll was conducted between July 10 and July 14 and involved 2,502 respondents.
Germany’s parliamentary elections are slated for September 24.
