WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On June 23, 2016, the United Kingdom held a referendum on leaving the European Union. England and Wales voted in favor of leaving the European Union, while Scotland and Northern Ireland voted against. Brexit negotiations between the United Kingdom and the European Union officially kicked off on June 19, and are due to be completed by the end of March 2019.
"It’s an open question how this will work with the UK. I think that the most likely opportunity is that the UK will have to stay or will try to stay in the single market with regard to data flows and data protection but I’m not sure," Jan Philipp Albrecht said on Wednesday.
Albrecht is now on a visit in Washington DC where he is holding meetings with the US administration, as well as the Congress and civil society.
