US Sentences Russian Man to 5 Years in Prison for Developing Malware

Russian national Mark Vartanyan, who was extradited to the United States from Norway in December, has been sentenced to five years in prison for developing the malicious software Citadel that steals financial information, US media reported on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Vartanyan was sentenced by a federal judge in Atlanta, Georgia, Associated Press reported. He will get a two year credit for serving time in a Norwegian prison.

In March, Vartanyan pleaded guilty to computer fraud charges.

The US Justice Department explained in a March press release that Citadel malware was designed to infect computer systems and steal financial account credentials and personal information.

Users of Citadel targeted and exploited computer networks of major financial and government institutions around the world, including several institutions the United States.

The malware program infected an estimated 11 million computers worldwide and is responsible for more than $500 million in losses, according to the Justice Department.
