"As the president said yesterday he was disappointed in the Attorney General Sessions's decision to recuse himself," Sanders stated. "But clearly he has confidence in him or he would not be the attorney general."
On Wednesday, Trump said in an interview with New York Times reporters that he would have never nominated Sessions for the post if he knew the then-senator would recuse himself from overseeing the Justice Department’s Russia probe.
When asked whether Trump is considering firing Sessions, Sanders said in such case, the president would have taken action a long time ago.
Trump has not spoken with Sessions in the past 24 hours, Sanders stated.
Earlier in the day, Sessions stated he was honored to serve at the country’s top prosecutor and intended to do so as long as it remained appropriate.
