PARIS (Sputnik) — The FN secretary general said that the party needed to listen to the people, as it failed to convince the voters, with regard to this idea, during the presidential election.
"I think that this question will be indeed put on the table before our adherents in September. I think that on this monetary question we can actually change our position … We see clearly that the unique currency serves our interests in some respects. The point is to know if it’s feasible to question it head-on, or whether we can consider an evolution. This means, in particular, making it so that it is not the Central European Bank which decides upon everything, and that the nations have their say in the management of the euro again," Bay told Franceinfo radio on Friday.
"So we cannot fail to take that into account," Bay added.
During the presidential campaign, the FN held a strongly anti-euro position with Le Pen calling for return to the French national currency, however, as surveys showed that the hardline stance on the unique currency was not popular with the voters, after making it to the second tour and shortly before the vote itself, Le Pen said that abandoning euro may not be the priority.
Florian Philippot, the FN vice-president in charge of strategy, spoke out in favor of ditching the euro in May, which led to reports on possible cleavage in the party.
