Lavrov: Israeli Interests to Be Taken Into Account in Syria De-Escalation Zone
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday he expected to finish work with the United States on resolving issues with the operation of the southern Syria de-escalation zone soon.

"I think that this work will be completed in the very near future," Lavrov said at a briefing.

He complimented Russian-US-Jordanian efforts as "the best confirmation that when we deal with concrete matters, not speculations, we can achieve results."

The main parameters on Russia's efforts to form a southern de-escalation zone in Syria with the United States have been addressed and have advanced to discussions of details, Lavrov added.

"The process of creating this zone continues, the main parameters have already been discussed. The details are now being resolved, relating to how it will operate specifically to ensure that the ceasefire regime between government troops and the armed opposition is respected in order to ensure unhindered humanitarian access," Lavrov said.

On July 7, Lavrov announced that experts from Russia, the United States and Jordan agreed on a memorandum on the establishment of a de-escalation zone in Syria's southwestern provinces following the first face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump. The ceasefire came into force on July 9.

On Tuesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minster Sergey Ryabkov told Sputnik that a meeting between Russian and US representatives dedicated to the new ceasefire deal might take place. The official noted a progress between Moscow and Washington and said that there was an opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties in the context of de-escalation zones' regulation.
