Meet Kendi, the newborn eastern black rhino calf at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden! This is the first black rhino born at the zoo since 1999.

"Every rhino calf born is incredibly important for the population, which includes fewer than 60 in North America," the zoo wrote on their official website. The black rhino calf was born on July 17, and she is healthy and very active. Kendi means 'the loved one' in Swahili. "This calf is only the fifth eastern black rhino born in the last two years in North America. Only one surviving calf was born in 2014/2015," Christina Gorsuch, the zoo's curator of mammals said.
