WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Polish government must make sure that the legislation it is currently pursuing does not violate Poland's constitution or weaken the rule of law in that country, the US State Department said in a press release on Friday.
"We urge all sides to ensure that any judicial reform does not violate Poland’s constitution or international legal obligations and respects the principles of judicial independence and separation of powers," the release stated.
The release added that the government has continued to pass legislation that seems to undermine judicial independence.
The United States is confident Poland's democracy will be able to these issues through dialogue and compromise to ensure checks and balances in the government are respected, the release added.
