WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "These hardworking Dreamers have played by the rules, paid their taxes and have earned the right to continue living and working in our great country," Schneiderman said in a press release accompanying the letter on Friday.

The release argued that efforts like the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program launched in an executive order by former President Barack Obama needs to remain in place as the United States mulls comprehensive immigration reform.

The Department of Homeland Security has announced it will keep the DACA program in place, but the agency has also terminated a separate program that would have allowed some parents to remain, according to published reports.

The letter quoted an earlier statement from Trump that the Dreamers – a term for affected children – could "rest easy."

Obama’s DACA order is being challenged in a number of lawsuits by opponents, who claim that only Congress has the authority to change US immigration laws.
