The two men appeared at Wimbledon magistrates court on Monday, July 24 after being arrested in Friday, July 21.
Binita Roscoe, prosecuting, said Miss Dookhran, who was of Indian Muslim origin, appeared to have been attacked.
"The deceased was involved in a relationship with an Arab Muslim and the family members didn't approve of this relationship because they are Indian Muslims," she said in court.
The survivor has given an account to police, said Ms. Roscoe.
"[She said] her face and mouth were covered in duct tape. Her hands were tied with cable ties and her feet were tied with rope. She believes a sock was placed in her mouth. She had heard the deceased who was in the shower screaming," said Ms. Roscoe.
Mr. Arshid, who was bearded and wearing a grey tracksuit, stood beside Mr. Tappu, who wore a black suit and white shirt.
District Judge James Henderson remanded the defendants in custody until a hearing at the Old Bailey next month.
