"Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, Manassas, Virginia, is being awarded $119,651,946 to a previously awarded contract to exercise an option for engineering services and support of the Integrated Submarine Imaging Systems program [that] provides visual and other capabilities for Navy submarines," the release said on Monday. "Services will include design, development, testing, reverse engineering, technology insertion/refreshment, engineering services, field engineering services and system support."
The Integrated Submarine Imaging System has taken the place of the old optical periscopes used on US submarines, according to published reports. The new periscopes use fiber optics communications and high resolution cameras to create digital images that can be enlarged to provide greater detail on surface targets.
The new imaging systems are being installed on the Los Angeles, Seawolf and Virginia classes of submarines, as well as the next generation Columbus strategic ballistic missile boats.
