WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US-led coalition forces carried out seven strikes against the Daesh (outlawed in Russia) near the Syrian city of Raqqa on Sunday, the Operation Inherent Resolve said in a press release.
"Near Raqqah, seven strikes engaged five ISIS [Islamic State] tactical units; destroyed two fighting positions, a mortar tube, and a mortar facility; and damaged five fighting positions and a supply route," the release stated on Monday.
Also on Sunday, six strikes near the Syrian cities of Abu Kamal and Deir ez-Zor destroyed oil refinement stills, oil tankers and a vehicle.
Three strikes consisting of 10 engagements were launched against Daesh targets in three Iraqi cities, Bayji, Qayyarah and Tal Afar. Those strikes engaged multiple terrorist units, destroyed vehicles, a staging area, buildings and a mortar system.
The US-led coalition of more than 70 members is conducting airstrikes, ground-based and rocket-propelled artillery fire against the Daesh in Syria and Iraq.
The strikes in Iraq are conducted in support of the Iraqi government, but those in Syria are not authorized by the UN Security Council or the government of President Bashar Assad.
