PARIS (Sputnik) – Presidential and parliamentary elections may take place in Libya in spring 2018, French President Emmanuel Macron said Tuesday.
Prime Minister of the Libyan Government of National Accord Fayez Sarraj and Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Khalifa Haftar met in France earlier in the day.
"I can confirm to you an agreement was reached to move towards elections which will take place in spring," Macron said after the meeting.
Fayez Sarraj and Khalifa Haftar agreed during a meeting in France on a plan to take Libya out of crisis, according to Macron.
"They adopted a joint statement which outlines the path, the roadmap of national reconciliation … I believe that the civil war is in no way inevitable, peace can be attained through dialogue," Macron said after the meeting.
