The first stage of negotiations will be held on August 16-20. Experts noted that the US intended to seek a better agreement that will reduce the country's trade deficit. According to the office of the US Trade Representative, it should improve access for US companies to the markets of Mexico and Canada.
"I am optimistic, I think that we will follow the path of joint work with mutual respect in free, open and sincere dialogue, seeking first and foremost a joint benefit. I think that we will be able to achieve common positions during the negotiations on the free trade agreement," Neto said.
According to the president, this agreement should bring benefits to all three parties, and the document itself, signed more than 20 years ago, features spheres that provide new opportunities that have not been covered yet.
The NAFTA agreement has been in force since 1994, uniting the markets of the USA, Canada and Mexico. Earlier, US President Donald Trump said the provisions of the document needed to be reviewed. The US may withdraw from the agreement, if it does not receive additional benefits from it, he said.
